Enemy on Island Issue in Doubt: The Capture of Wake Island
Published in Paperback by Pictorial Histories Publishing Co. Inc. (December, 1988)
Authors: Stan B. Cohen, James Farmer, and Joe A. Starita
Average review score:

It covers a critical period in American history.
This book covers a critical period in American history. It shows the bravery of American marines, sailors and civilians in fighting superior Japanese forces in defense of Wake Island. Through photographs, art and text, it shows that bravery can be demonstrated in a prisoner of war camp as well as at a battlefield. Warfare makes ordinary men into heroes and villains and this is shown here. This book is a must for the World War Two reader.

Escape from Fire Island! a Date With Destiny Adventure Pb
Published in Paperback by Quirk Books (April, 2003)
Author: James H. English
Average review score:

Campy, B-movie choose-your-own fun...
OK, I liked this - I really liked it! Toxic waste is turning everyone on Fire Island into homicidal zombie drag queens; do you flee to the ferry, attempt to find a way to defeat the tottering-on-platform-heels undead, or try to score at the nearest bar? [Think of your favorite cheesy zombie flick, but where the girlish screams come from a drama queen instead of a cheerleader!]

As a choose-your-own book it's quite well done: the choices are plentiful and varied - sensible choices, libido-driven choices, the "I know this is a bad idea but I want to see what happens" choices, just plain unlucky choices - and the possible endings cover a pretty wide swathe, with a few that may be regarded as "successful" and lots of opportunities for disaster.

And it's funny. Silly/campy/funny: when the hero's swimsuit is shredded he exclaims "Damn it! That was Versace!" And there are hunky lifeguards, and glory holes, and mermen, and... well, as one of the cover-blurb reviews puts it, "All the excitement of a Fire Island vacation - for just $$$. You can't even buy a *drink* on Fire Island for $$$"

If I had one quibble it would be that the illustrations are a wee bit tame - but I suppose that's in keeping with the style of the book, so I won't fuss too much. [They're tame enough that they might puzzle, but probably won't shock, anyone who opens this book under the impression that it's a traditional choose-your-own adventure book.

[The cover also lists future releases in the "Date with Destiny" line, and I sincerely hope they're really in the works. I can't wait to read "I Know Who You Did Last Summer"...]

Escape from Monkey Island: Prima's Official Strategy Guide

Very Helpful
For us people that can use help sometimes (or get frustrated easily) this is the perfect book. The first chapter is the introduction. Followed by a story of what has happened in the other games. Then a chapter of all the characters. After that, there's the Hint section. In this section you get just a little bit of help. Then there's a chapter called Maps, Charts and Other Aids to Navigation. After that, my favorite chapter. The complete Walkthrough. Followed by a list of inventory items and their uses. And last but not least, there's a small chapter of art. The Background chapter is quite interesting to read. And the Character chapter is interesting to. The hints section is perfect for those who don't want to totally give the game away. And the walkthrough is perfect for people like me. (Those who like the easy way of playing the game). This is a great book to have.

Ethnology of Easter Island
Published in Paperback by Bishop Museum Pr (April, 1971)
Author: Alfred Metraux
Average review score:

The One Indispensable Book on Easter Island

This 400+ page paperback, a reprint of the 1941 original, is printed in a font size which makes it the equivalent of 800 pages of today's more common offerings. Almost 60 years later it remains the unsurpassed Encyclopaedia Pascuensis. Geography, climate, flora, fauna, society, art, language, culture, everything is there, tattoos, games, the still undeciphered writing system, religion, traditional law... everything. Indispensable to anyone interested in Easter Island, and at $29.50, a steal. However much I may disagree with Metraux about the famous, enigmatic, rongorongo (see http://www.netaxs.com/~trance/rongo.html), I do not hesitate one nanosecond in giving it the top rating: 10.

The Exiles of Crocodile Island
Published in Paperback by Mesorah Publications, Limited (June, 1984)
Authors: Yosef Dershowitz and Henye Meyer
Average review score:

awesome and moving, and based on truth
An awesome and moving fictionalized account of the Jewish children abducted from Portugal by the church, and sent to colonize the island of Sao Tome, and become christians. The book describes the desperate attempt of the children to hold on to the religion of their parents. The fictionalized account of the children's struggle is backed by historical evidence. I have heard there are residents of Sao Tome to this day who still identify their Jewish ancestry.
